Collagen injections, also called soft-tissue augmentation, is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure performed to correct wrinkles, depressions in the skin, and/or scarring. The collagen injection procedure involves injecting a substance (collagen and/or fat) into the skin in order to plump or fill-up the area being treated. The result of collagen injections is usually not permanent and touch-up injections may be needed every three to 12 months. For some, however, the collagen injections can stimulate the body’s own production of collagen, lengthening the time necessary between follow-up injections.
Similar to collagen, a natural protein found in humans, injectable collagen is made from cows. This protein gives support and structure to skin, bones, ligaments, and other body parts. Collagen injections from tissue donors or self-donated are generally utilized to treat wrinkles, scars, and facial lines.
Injecting one’s own fat to correct skin defects is called microlipoinjection. It includes the transfer or recycling of fat from one body area to another allowing the surgeon to recontour the skin. With a tiny needle, the fat is extracted and then re-injected into the selected site. This is often a favored treatment choice since it involves the use of one’s own fat, reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
Collagen injections can help fill in these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased and sunken areas of the face. Collagen injections can also add fullness to the lips and cheeks. Injectable fillers may be used alone or in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure, such as a laser treatment, or a recontouring procedure, such as a facelift.
Restylane and Perlane
Restylane and Perlane are part of a group of cosmetic products known as ‘fillers’.
The products are composed of stabilized hyaluronic acid which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin. It works by drawing in water and therefore augmenting the skin, thus reducing the wrinkle treated. It is a non-animal product and patch testing is not necessary.
It is used to smooth out facial lines and wrinkles particularly around the mouth and for lip enhancement creating a fuller more sensual mouth.
Lip Lift is a procedure effective in reducing the length of the upper lip and also allows more of the red portion of the lip to be visible. This procedure is often combined with lip augmentation to add increased rejuvenation to the mouth.
Corner of the Mouth Lift
The Corner of the Mouth Lift provides a natural correction for down-turned corners of the mouth. The incisions are hidden at the junction of the red portion of the lip and facial skin. This procedure effectively removes or reduces the frowning appearance caused by this condition.
Lip Reshaping Surgery
Procedures to increase the fullness of lips can enhance the overall shape of the mouth and reduce creases or wrinkles in and around the mouth. Methods to augment the lips include injections and soft implants. Injections may need to be repeated for optimal results. Implants are generally effective for a prolonged period of time without being repeated. Injections are generally simple and can be performed with local anesthesia. Lip implants may be placed using either local or monitored anesthesia. Recovery can include some swelling and bruising. Most patients return to normal activity within a day or two after lip injections and within three or four days after lip implants.
Enhancement procedures can provide patients with more youthful, attractive lips. The effects can range from subtle to dramatic, depending on the patients needs and wants.
